A Quality Baby Mattress

Whether you’re having your first baby or your fourth, choosing a baby mattress is always an important decision.  Here are a few tips on what to look for in a quality mattress for the crib!

A baby mattress is very different from an adult mattress.  While the mattress you sleep on is made for comfort and support, a baby mattress is generally made with support and safety in mind.

One of the major differences you’ll see from mattress to mattress is, of course, price!  You can find a brand new baby mattress for $40, or you can spend hundreds of dollars on a premium version.  But are they really that much better?

One of the vital things to look for in a baby mattress is the coil count.  Generally speaking, the higher the coil count, the better quality the mattress.  A greater number of coils in the mattress will translate to superior, more even support for your baby. This is so important because your baby’s posture, skeletal muscles and spine are still developing and will continue to do so until your baby reaches the age where they are walking.

Another tip for finding a quality baby mattress is to look for vents on the sides of the mattress.  This allows for air flow into and out of the mattress itself, helping keep the mattress fresh.

Baby mattresses are usually encased in vinyl or some other water-resistant material.  For obvious reasons, when changing your baby’s mattress sheet, give the surface a wipedown with a diluted vinegar solution and let dry before replacing the clean sheet.  Vinegar has natural anti-bacterial properties and won’t leave chemical fumes that are harmful for baby to inhale.

Another option that many parents are now choosing is an organic baby mattress.  Made of an organic cotton cover and natural wool filler, these are actually the safest baby mattresses.  Did you know that as a standard mattress ages, the vinyl covering can give off harmful fumes as the plastic breaks down?    This is why so many parents are moving towards natural and organic nursery items.  You can look at natural baby products here, if that interests you.

Definitely spend as much as you can afford on a baby mattress.  Price is an indicator of quality when it comes to mattresses.  Your baby will be sleeping on this mattress for many years to come because after your baby outgrows their crib, it can be used in a toddler bed as well.
