Do You Really Need A Baby Bassinet?

You may wonder whether you really need a baby bassinet.  After all, you have the crib, so why wouldn’t baby sleep in there?  Here are some reasons!

When you bring home your newborn, if you’re like most parents, you generally will not want to place them in their crib at night right away.  The reasons for this are numerous and all of them are valid.  Here are just a few:

  1. You can’t stand to be away from your baby.
  2. You want them closer to you for nighttime feedings.
  3. You’re breastfeeding so it’s more convenient to have your baby closer to you at night.

With my own two children, it was a combination of the above reasons. I used my baby bassinet to lay baby down at night right next to my bed so that when they awakened for a feeding or diaper change, I was right there to take care of them.

Another great feature of a baby bassinet is that they are generally portable and have either casters or wheels.  This is excellent for when you’re in the living room and you want your baby near you, but they’re sleeping. You just push the baby bassinet into whatever room you’re in.  Your baby still gets to sleep comfortably and you can keep an eye on them while doing other things in the same room.

It’s important to remember that once baby reaches around 13-15 pounds, the baby bassinet should be retired.  Bassinets are also not meant to be permanent beds for baby, but rather an option for new parents to keep their baby close to them wherever they are in the house.

Personally, I loved using the baby bassinet with both of my babies.  It was convenient, make me feel as if they were safer because they were near me, and I felt like they felt safer being in a small bassinet at first rather than a large crib.

Take a look at some of the new baby bassinets out right now – they are amazing!  Some have a built-in nightlight for diaper changes, some have soft classical music or nature sounds.  And some are just a plain ‘ole bassinet, like the one I used for my babies.
